Is Your Air Conditioner Ready for Summer?

Home | Blog | Published on July 14th, 2025

As the days get longer and temperatures climb, there’s one question every homeowner should be asking: Is my AC ready for summer? When a heatwave hits, your air conditioner becomes your home’s best defense against sweltering temperatures. But if it’s not properly maintained, you could be in for an uncomfortable and expensive surprise.

The good news is, a little early preparation can go a long way toward ensuring your system runs smoothly all summer long. Here are some key steps to get your AC ready for the season ahead.

Change the Air Filter

One of the simplest and most effective ways to boost AC performance is to replace your air filter. Over time, filters become clogged with dust, pollen, pet hair, and other debris, restricting airflow and making your system work harder than it should. This not only reduces efficiency but can lead to poor indoor air quality and even frozen coils.

For most systems, filters should be changed every 1–3 months, depending on usage and household conditions. Start the summer with a fresh filter. It’s a quick fix that can improve cooling, reduce strain on your system, and even lower your energy bills.

Schedule Professional Maintenance

Annual AC maintenance is essential to catch potential problems before they become costly repairs. A licensed HVAC technician will inspect and clean key components such as the condenser coils, refrigerant levels, blower motor, thermostat, and electrical connections. They’ll also test system performance and make sure everything is running at peak efficiency.

Spring is the ideal time to schedule this tune-up, before demand spikes and service appointments fill up. Regular maintenance not only extends the life of your system but can also help prevent mid-summer breakdowns when you need cooling the most.

Clear the Area Around Your Outdoor Unit

Your outdoor condenser unit needs proper airflow to dissipate heat and function effectively. Leaves, weeds, grass clippings, and other debris can accumulate around the unit, blocking vents and causing it to overheat.

Take a few minutes to trim back vegetation at least 3 feet around the unit. Gently clean off any dirt or dust from the coils with a garden hose (being careful not to damage them), and make sure nothing is resting on top of the unit. Keeping the area clear allows your system to breathe and cool more efficiently.

Check and Unblock Indoor Vents

Walk through your home and make sure all air vents are open and unobstructed. Furniture, curtains, rugs, or other items can block airflow, making it harder for your AC to distribute cool air evenly. Blocked vents can also cause pressure imbalances in your ductwork, reducing overall system performance.

Consider cleaning the vent covers to remove any dust buildup, and make sure dampers are open in rooms you plan to cool.

A Cool Start to Summer

Your air conditioning system works hard during the hottest months of the year, so don’t wait until it’s 95°F outside to give it the attention it needs. By following these simple steps, you can maximize comfort, reduce energy costs, and avoid emergency repair calls during the peak of summer.
